Don Norman of the Saint Louis area doubled through David Williams in a hand soon after the bubble burst. David raised under the gun and Don called in position. The board ran out Q67T and the two players got it all in on the turn. Williams turned over AA while Norman showed QJ. The rivered queen gave Norman the double up and took a bite out of Williams' monster stack- he now has about 1.5 million.

Norman remarked "He can't have the nuts everytime" while Williams' clarified to WPT Champion Will Failla that the money went in on the turn, when he was still ahead.

Aces are David's Downfall

David Williams' quest for a WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship title comes to an end when he runs into the pocket queens of Vanessa Selbst. 

On a 10-high flop Williams is all-in with 10 8 against Selbt's pocket queens. The board doesn't offer any help and he sends his last 150k across the table.

"It always hurts when you get knocked out of a tournament," says Williams who began Day 2 as the chip leader. "But now I get to go home to my family so that's a good thing."

Williams at one point had his chip stack up to 2.5 million, but he twice lost big pots with pocket aces, including one to chip leader Will Failla.

Williams, who was the runner-up here to Daniel Negreanu in 2004, is looking forward to seeing his his seven month old daughter Liliana.

Moving day had lots of drama and even more big pots as Borgata regular Will "The Thrill" Failla has the chip lead with 27 players left in the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship.

"The sick part about it is, I don't think I knocked out one person all day," said Failla, who bagged nearly 3.3 million chips. "I just played a couple of big pots and don't remember knocking anybody out."

Failla is ahead of three players, Doug Kim, Ricky Hale and Darren Elias, who are all in the 2.5 million range, but some big names are lurking around the 1.5 million chip average (49 BB).

The list includes Matt Glantz, another Borgata regular, who has $3.8 million in career earnings, WSOP bracelet holder Vanessa Selbst and Fred Goldberg, along with three-time WSOP Champion "Miami" John Cernuto.

The list of recognizable pros who are on the rail during Day 3 of the tournament included two-time WSOP bracelet winner Jeff Madsen, who finished in 60th place ($11,740) and David Williams, who was 31st ($16,352).

The chip lead changed hands throughout the night as Dan Colman, who was involved with this controversial hand, and Joe Dittmar both had the lead at different points. But in the end it was Failla, who recently won his first WPT title, with the lead heading into Day 4.

"When you win your first WPT (title) it's a feeling you really can't put words on. I keep using the word surreal," says the New York native, who cut his tournament teeth at Borgata.

"For me to win it in my home casino that would mean more to me than anything else because my family will be here for it," he said. "It will make a big difference to me."

Failla and the other 26 players return 11 am Thursday to continue their pursuit for the Borgata Poker Open Championship and the $922,441 first place prize. The field will play down to the final six before returning Friday for the televised final table.

Williams with the Lead

A generous player early in the day helped David Williams become one of the only three players to crack the 600k mark propelling him to the end of Day 2 chip lead of the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship event.

The WSOP bracelet holder is chased by a stellar field that includes Vanessa Selbst, John Racener, and Jeff Madsen who are all still alive for the $922,441 first place prize.

"It was a steady climb most of the day," said Williams, who finished the day with 727,100 chips, "but a guy gave me a gift by calling off 170k with ace-queen."  A surprised Williams, who has nearly $8 million in career tournament earnings, had ace-king.

When big slick held for a ~450k chip pot it helped propel him to the chip lead ahead of Maurice Hawkins (647k) and David Jones (643k).

Other WSOP bracelet holders in the field include Selbst (315k), Madsen (124k), and "Miami" John Cernuto (120k). Start of Day 2 chip leader Abe Korotki had an up and down day and bagged 192k.

170 players return 11 am Wednesday for Day 3 with an average stack of 231k (46 BB) as the field stakes it claim at the $4,332,900 total buy-in. The top 100 finishers are guaranteed a minimum of $8,386 and the field will play down to the final 27, just two days before Friday's televised final table of six.

"I love Borgata," said Willliams, "this was my first WPT (tour) event and I finished second to Daniel (Negreanu).  I've got a soft spot in my heart for this place and want to rectify that," he said after his runner-up finish in 2004.

"Having the chip lead now means nothing, You can be one cooler away from being short stacked or even out. They key is to keep making good decisions."

Nelson Robinson ran his pocket 5s into pocket 7s and was busted.

Ebony Kenney got her last 27k in holding KQ and was dominated by AK.  The King on the flop changed nothing, but the Queen on the river gave her a much needed double-up.

Event 20: Bubble Burst - Break Time

Mark Bramley (utg) opened for 25k.  David Williams (button) raised to 60k and Mark flatted.

On the J J T rainbow flop, both players checked. Turn was the 9 of hearts, putting two hearts on the board.  Mark bet 45k, David Williams raised to 100k, and Mark called after giving it some thought.

River was an offsuit King.  Mark checked, David moved in, having Mark well covered, and Mark checked into the tank for an extended stay.

All the other tables had completed their hands, so a large crowd had formed around the table.

One table over, Stephen Ekin had already folded, leaving himself with only 5,000 chips.

Mark, who started the hand with about 450k, finally called all-in.  David showed pocket Kings for the rivered full house.  Mark mucked his hand, later claiming he held AQ of hearts (open-ender, nut-flush draw on the turn, rivered Broadway).

Mark busted out in 101st place, earning zip, zilch, nada.  (Mark finished 2nd in the $500 + $60 event earlier in this series for over $22,000).

David Williams extended his chip lead to almost 2 million.

Once the player count was verified, the final 100 took off for a break.  They are all in the money and guaranteed to earn at least $8,386.

Every table made a mass exodus for a 1hr-15min. dinner break while David Williams and a player to his immediate right finished out a hand.

WPT cameras caught the b-roll footage as his Opponent made a crying call.

"This is a great call if you're bluffing" said the Opponent after tumbling in about 10,000 on a board of J-10-K-Q-8. Wrong time to look up Williams as he rolls over A-4 for broadway and the scoop. No chop as Opponent quickly mucked.

Nothing before dinner for Matt Glantz (Lafayette Hills, PA) who was nursing no more than 60,000. But now he's caught fire growing his stack up to 290,000 after his J-J cracked Edgar Lemus-Argueta's Aces.

Ekin Ekes In

Surviving the bubble in a high profile tournament is one of the most stressful times in poker and three players are feeling the elation of making it into the money.

Stephen Ekin (Vero Beach, FL) is the biggest benefactor of Mark Bramley's implosion against David Williams when he ended up with just 5k (5 antes). He wasn't happy the "vultures" were circling the table as he folds his way into the money.  "I had three hands," he says before being the big blind, "I wasn't playing anything but aces."

Ekin shows his appreciation by giving Williams, and his entire table, a gift card after cashing in the event. 

Lacrocca Lasts Long Enough

Michael Larocca (Boca Raton, FL) is another shorty breathing a sigh of relief after getting through into the money with 35k. As play was hand for hand he said, "This is gross. If I'm the bubble boy I will puke all over the table."

Pitti Before & After

The best bubble story comes from Joe Pitti (East Meadow, NY), who was half way out the door until the dealer declares a chopped pot when his 6 kicker is irrelevant.

"They all started clapping because the bubble boy busted," says Pitti, who was thrilled with new life and cashing for the minimum $8,386.

A final table that featured two satellite qualifiers, a WSOP bracelet holder, and a trio of Borgata regulars comes down to the J♠ as it's Bobby's World for the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship.

Bahbak 'Bobby' Oboodi (Morris Plains, NJ) is the last man standing in a record field of 1,313 entries as he takes down the $922,441 first place prize. "I'm just numb, the excitement hasn't hit me yet," said the 24 year old poker pro moments after winning the title.

"I feel like everyone else is more excited than I am, but I'm sure it's going to hit me later tonight when I realize I just won this tournament and nearly a million dollars."

Oboodi beat Jin Hwang (Gambrills, MD), a man who seriously doubted that he would make the final table and checked out of his hotel room on Day 4 before play resumed with 27 players.

"I'm so proud of myself, I think I did my best," said Hwang, who had no major cashes on his tournament resume, but pocketed $554,303 as runner-up. "I'm completely satisfied and happy with my play and ready to go on to the next tournament."

Heads up play began with each player holding at least 40 big blinds, but lasted only 18 hands. The J♠ was the key card that propelled Oboodi to victory on the final two hands.

On the penultimate hand, Oboodi hit a pair of jacks on the turn as his AJ bested Hwang's AQ to win a 10 million chip pot and extended his lead. The final blow comes when the one eyed jack hit the turn again giving Oboodi a flush and Hwang two pairs.

Oboodi had to sweat the river, but when Hwang missed his outs for a full house, the Borgata regular wins the championship with a queen high flush.

"My strategy for heads up was to small ball it. I didn't want to get into any big hands where I'm going to be put in marginal situations," he said while being congratulated from his rowdy rooting section, the Morris County Crew (MCC). "I was fortunate enough to make the flush against top pair on the last hand and it held up and here we are, champion."

Hwang, who didn't have any regrets on how he played the final two hands said, "I didn't think there was anyway he had a flush there," and that he expected Oboodi would have raised Hwang's flop bet with a flush draw. "He played it perfectly."

Hwang, the 56 year old self-employed financial agent, was happy to still be playing for a six figure cash as he was 27th out of 27 returning players on the final three tables with just 12 big blinds. But after surviving multiple all-in pots, he got a huge lift with quad jacks after his pocket hooks were dominated by the pocket queens of Will "The Thrill" Failla.

"That was the biggest turning point," said Hwang, who entered this tournament on a $400 satellite, "and that's when I thought I could do it. I was feeling comfortable and it was like someone was leading me to the final table."

When the final table of six resumed under the glare of the tv lights on Day 5, Hwang was once again the short stack with still only one dozen big blinds. But one by one, he moved up the pay scale.

The first to go was Ricky Hale (Cornwall, England), the other short stack, who turned a $100 satellite into $186,585 for his 6th place finish.

Darren Elias (Montclair, NJ), one of the three New Jersey players at the table, was 5th ($230,610) when his pocket jacks ran into Oboodi's pocket kings. The hand took Oboodi's stack to nearly 19 million and caused problems for Fred Goldberg (Hollywood, FL).

"I was sitting on Fred's left and he was put in a difficult spot being on my right because we were both chip leaders heading into the day," said Oboodi. "You really don't want to play too big of a hand out of position against the second chip leader. He was really unlucky with his seat because if he was on my left I'm sure I would have had just as difficult of a time."

Goldberg, a WSOP bracelet holder and the 10th place finisher in the 2006 Main Event, was frustrated throughout the day and finished 4th ($280,925) when he was out kicked by Oboodi on Goldberg's final hand.

Oboodi had more than half the chips in play while three-handed, as Hwang was second in chips and Daniel Buzgon (Marlton, NJ), the third local player, was third.

Hwang eventually knocked out Buzgon in third place ($335,433), setting up heads-up play, as the final two outlasted a world class field.

The tournament featured big names, bracelet holders and WPT champions. In addition to Failla (11th/$50,315), who was bidding to be the first back-to-back winner on tour and calls Borgata his "home" casino, notables who cashed in the $4,332,900 total buy-in included:

Event 8: Costly Mistake

$350 + $50 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

As Matt Williams (New York, NY) was busting on table 2, an odd situation was unfolding on table 1, just before the final table.

On a board of 4 5 6 Dennis Thurman (Fisk, MO) bets 500k from the SB, Manh Nguyen (Munhall, PA) says, "call" assuming that the bet put him all-in.

Thurman: 10 10 (pair of 10s)
Nguyen: K 7 (over card, open ended straight draw)

Turn: Q (no change)

River: 3 (Nguyen hits the straight)

When the chips are counted Nguyen has 580k, meaning that he was never all-in and that a round of betting should have occurred after the turn. The Nguyen oversight and premature river card means the 3 is back in the deck and the hand gets a new river card.

After Nguyen's last 80k are in the middle, the new river is a brick and instead of doubling up, he's on the rail in 10th place.

Nguyen, who won Event 4 ($40,000), ends up with only $2,560 instead of a shot at another Borgata Poker Open title.
